In London, there are, happily, quite a few lesbians; but the main UK lesbian and bi women’s magazine, DIVA, insists on featuring a straight woman who played a lesbian on a TV show cancelled years back (Rachel Shelley) and a “queer” MtF columnist (Paris Lees) rather than say, a column from an isolated lesbian living in the rural countryside who knows no other gay women, which I’m sure would actually be more relevant and useful to most readers.

I apologise if I have misrepresented asexuality (though I am with GNQ as to be being baffled as to what it means if it does not relate to not feeling sex is necessary or desirable or alternatively, not fancying others, or alternatively again - not wanting to be in romantic relationships. As I understand it, asexual encompasses all of these and more, but is generally taken to refer to lack of desire for sex - happy to be educated though). I have a vagina. This does not stop me being a lawyer, or loving women, or liking football (soccer), or wearing what I like. My vagina does, however, MATTER. I am female. I bleed every month. I can get pregnant (though I do not have and have never had sex with a penis). I have a clitoris. I can experience multiple orgasms. I am a lesbian which means a female that likes females (it is neither my “gender” nor my partner’s that makes us gay, but the fact we are the same sex).

Genitalia is extremely relevant to the women who are subjugated all over the world on the basis of their sex, you know that pesky biological real fact that you damn tumblr rainbow sparkly genderqueer morons claim is so irrelevant and passé.

Whether I like it or not, I was born female and I will die female. That MATTERS. You know what doesn’t matter? If I feel like calling myself George and dressing up in stereotypically “mannish” dress for the day. I don’t really, but let’s say I did. That’s the thing no-one should give a shit about. This is a fucking nightmare. I have personally always wanted to keep a lot of distance between myself and homeless men, and have taken a lot of flack from fellow Christians and progressives about it. But this, right here, is why. However I always WANTED to be wrong. I wanted it to be that I am just a scaredycat, extra cautious, maybe even biased like some people claimed. But not. This is what men do to women, given half a fucking chance.

This is personal to me. She’s the same age as me. I’ve been to that church. We probably have acquaintances in common, though I didn’t know her personally. She died trying to be a good person. Shit shit shit.

Rose Verbena: This is very, very sad. I remember a similar case in my youth, and several others since then. Unfortunately, sometimes the people we encounter on the street are seriously mentally ill and/or dangerous. Not all. Not even most. But enough that there is a grain of truth to the fear we feel as women or physically vulnerable men when encountering strangers. This is one of the reasons I’m so in favor of the new model they’re trying for homeless people in Seattle: buildings with modest, furnished studio apartments with private bathrooms where individuals can live in secure privacy (behind a locked door) for a time until they get themselves back together. These apartment buildings have security and social workers on-staff 24/7 to help people and keep people safe as well as services to help them get their act together, get a job, and get back to living on their own, if possible, or into some kind of permanent housing. People get assaulted all the time in open-plan, mixed-gender shelters. We need to find a way to help the homeless get back on their feet without putting them or members of the community into senseless stranger-danger. You have to wonder what kind of back-ground checks could be done on a person in this situation? It would be nearly impossible to know what they’ve really done in the past. That’s why secure, individual housing makes more sense to me than shared housing.

Extremely sad story. Not on the same level, but many male individuals begging on the streets of London are extremely aggressive. I have been harassed for money by men late at night. I think such men should understand they should not approach or bother women on their own even if it is some spare change they are after.

She is the most beautiful woman, inside and out, that I have ever known. My gf before that was from overseas (Poland). I have a wide variety of friends and am currently in the middle of a WhatsApp conversation with my Hindu bisexual friend and a lesbian friend who is of Afro-Caribbean and Latin American background. I am far from a bigot. I do not, however, date or have sex with males. That is my preference. I don’t find men, males, penises, male bodies etc attractive. I am attracted to the whole female package, which MtFs don’t have. I absolutely refuse to accept cries of bigot, right-wing, transphobic, prejudiced, small-minded or anything similar.

I don’t think anyone should call you a bigot for expressing the type of person to whom you are typically attracted. The sexual and romantic attractions of others are not fair game for political pontificating or pointscoring (I enjoyed that alliteration!)

Re your question, I just politely decline like I would any woman in whom I was not interested. I hope no person would push my decision and not take no for an answer, but males sometimes press the issue, as you note; some females do, but that is less frequent. I have been turned down myself of course!! - and I think the way to do these things is to be as nice as possible; it is not, overall, a big deal if I don’t fancy someone or they don’t fancy me.
